Big thanks to Sue Black for organising this event for BCS Women which had an all-female panel debating the merits of social media in business under the headline: “Are You Social or Anti-Social?”.

Dr Black chaired the event with Joanne Jacobs, LJRich and myself as speakers. It was a great night, with around 120 people attending, lots of good questions and some sparky debate.

As Sue points out over on her blog, a show of hands early on revealed that most of the audience considered themselves to be social media friendly. With all that digital savvy in the room, maybe it was no surprise that the event ended up trending on Twitter in London (woo-hoo)!

I talked about what will happen to your business if you don’t embrace social tools, focusing on competitive advantage, employee retention and product innovation.

Jo gave solid advice on how to tell a good social media strategist from a bad one (top tips: don’t employ a marketing expert with no strategic business background, and don’t position the strategist within IT because they’ll be limited by IT budget and objectives).

LJ looked at damage limitation: the issues organisations face when an employee (or potential employee) make negative comments on a social network (namely Twitter) and the employer needs to respond. She cited #ciscofatty and #welovebaskers as examples, and praised Cisco especially for its approach.
